Chris Cornell, of Soundgarden, is the lead singer, with the instrumentalists of Rage Against The Machine. This fact is inescapable and blatantly obvious. Frankly they didn’t try to hide it either. This isn’t by any means a bad thing though (more on that later).
The classic hard rock stylings of RATM with Cornell’s piercing vocals work well together to make this overall quite a powerful album.
It starts off with the powerful Cochise (probably their best known song, thanks to James Bond) and mostly continues on that theme, with a few more laid back tracks (I’m not convinced that I’d call them ballads).
One thing that does annoy me is a couple of Tom Morello’s guitar solo’s are quite frankly silly. To me he might as well have just taken a mic and said, “Hey everyone! It’s me! Tom!” It certainly doesn’t ruin tha album by any means, I just don’t think the solos suit the flow of the songs.
If you like Soundgarden or Rage Against The Machine, you can’t go wrong with this album. I love it.
Standout tracks are Cochise, Gasoline, Set It Off, Shadow On The Sun and Light My Way.
9/10
*A bit on information that you won’t find easily is that the album cover was designed by Storm Thorgerson’s company, Hipgnosis (Storm was the creative visual force behind much of Pink Floyd’s artwork, with his most famous undoubtedly being the Dark Side Of The Moon artwork).
