I think in this case a Wikipedia quote is called for. “The Avalanches are an electronic music group from Melbourne, Australia, best known for their live DJ sets and debut album Since I Left You, which was assembled from approximately 3,500 vinyl samples…”
And the samples are awesome. As I understand it, The Avalanches were the first group to ever be granted permission to use a sample of Madonna’s (being Holiday in Stay Another Season).
The samples are far from the usual James Brown style funky soul samples used by most DJ’s. The opening track starts with a calypso style sample which really shows the mood of the album; feel-good party music. In fact some of it honestly reminds me of The Love Boat (in a good way).
One of the most brilliant things about this album is the flow. It’s very easy to listen to the album from start to finish because of the seamless transition of the songs. Some tracks actually serve simply as a transition into the following track.
The Avalanches biggest single was Frontier Psychiatrist, starting with a horse neighing, it only gets better from there.
Overall, this album is brilliant. It feels good listening to it, it sounds great loud and it puts a smile on yer dial.
The entire album is a standout.
