1996
I am quite fond of Beck, but strangely I just don’t have any of his music. Well, actually I do. I have Odelay. Obviously.
Trying to explain Beck to someone who has never heard him is difficult. I would say scratchy, alternative, bluesy rock with a funky beat and an experimental acid country tang…?
Sorta.
That said there are a lot of flavours in Odelay, more than I care to try and name. Mostly I would say it has a blues mood to it but when I say that it is NOT blues.
Whilst this album has a great energy, it also has a very laid back feel to it. I find it’s the kind of album I sit back into the couch to listen to even though most of it is still quite at home on the dancefloor. Some tracks are an assault on the auditory senses whilst others are right at home with a glass of red wine.
On the whole it’s a fun album. If you like rock and blues I don’t think you’d mind it.
Standout tracks are Devil’s Haircut, Novacane, Where It’s At & Sissyneck.
