I was going to write how Rubber Factory sounds like it was produced in a garage. That, however, is so far from the truth. It wasn’t recorded in a garage at all. Nor even a home.
It was recorded in an abandoned factory.
At it’s roots, this album is low down dirty rockin’ garage blues. The Black Keys are a bloke on a guitar and another bloke with a drum kit. The music is simple but effective and played with heart and soul. The album starts out raw and finishes raw.
These guys seem to love what they do and they love doing it together (the music, I mean).
The slower songs technically aren’t so well done; the beat isn’t as tight and you can hear the flaws in the guitar that are hidden in the faster, heavier songs. That said I find that these flaws actually add to the atmosphere of the rawness of this album. I mean it was recorded in an abandoned factory. If it sounded perfect I’d probably be disappointed.
If you like The White Stripes or Cream, you’ll love these guys. I actually find these fellas a bit more versatile.
All in all, this album sounds awesome loud. If you love one track, you’ll like ‘em all (well, almost all).
Standout tracks are 10 A.M. Automatic, Just Couldn’t Tie Me Down, Girl Is On My Mind, Grown So Ugly and Stack Shot Billy.
